Steadfast Love

Today’s Scripture is “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23

This is a promise of newness that means each day starts with a fresh mercy from God. I do not have to stockpile mercies; I do not have to hoard God’s Grace. I get a fresh, unending supply, just as sure as the sun shines or the falling rain.

Let’s take a closer look at these verses. The Lord’s “great love” (“steadfast love” in some translations) abides even in times of trouble and Divine Judgment. In the Bible, God never stopped loving Israel, despite His Discipline of them. Love in the Old Testament encompasses elements of grace, mercy, goodness, forgiveness, faithfulness. In the New Testament love is patience, bears all things, believes all things, hopes and endures all things, selfless, sacrificial, unconditional and ‘ahavah,’ Hebrew word for love, is God’s active, everlasting love for us, because God chose us – God to us, us to God, us to each other is rooted in God’s Own Eternal Active Ahavah!

Second theme is God’s Unfailing Compassion or Mercy. It is a reminder that each new day brings with it a renewal of God’s compassion, an assurance that our sufferings are not unnoticed and that hope, like the dawn, will always rise anew. Mercy is God’s withholding of a just punishment.

The dawning of every new day should be seen as a gift of God’s Light breaking through the darkness and His Mercy overcoming our troubles. Every morning demonstrates God’s Grace, a new beginning in which gloom must flee.

As believers, we still sin and grieve the Holy Spirit, but forgiveness is always available (1 John 1:8–9). God’s Mercy is ready to forgive our sins, as they are atoned for by the Shed Blood of Jesus Christ on the Cross. We serve a great, loving, and merciful God. Our God is for us, not against us.

Whatever kind of person you are—morning, noon, night, or no thank you—God has a fresh supply of mercy for you today. And tomorrow. And the next day. It never runs out because He makes all things new! And even when you feel rejected or dejected, you can know that it won’t last forever. There’s always tomorrow.
