A to Z Series: When Jesus Said “Our Father”

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He began with two revolutionary words: “Our Father.” In that moment, He was not merely giving them a formula—He was inviting them into relationship. Jesus revealed that the Almighty God of the universe desires to be known not only as Creator, but as a loving Father who delights in His children.

Attributes:

Attentive: “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.” — Isaiah 65:24 (NIV)
Our Heavenly Father does not miss a single prayer, sigh, or whispered concern. He is never too busy, never distracted, and never unavailable. Every conversation matters because we matter to Him.

Benevolent: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.” — James 1:17 (NIV)
God’s heart toward His children is marked by generosity and kindness. He delights in blessing us—not because we have earned it, but because giving good gifts flows naturally from His loving nature.

Corrective: “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent His rebuke, because the Lord disciplines the one He loves, as a father the son he delights in.” — Proverbs 3:11–12 (NIV)
A loving father guides and corrects his children, and our Heavenly Father does the same. His correction is not punishment, but loving redirection toward what is best, flowing from His wisdom and care.

Devoted: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” — Isaiah 49:15 (NIV)
God’s commitment to His children surpasses even the strongest human bond. His devotion is unwavering, unconditional, and eternal.

Empowering: “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.” — 2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)
Our Father does not love us and then leave us to manage alone. He equips, strengthens, and provides everything necessary for the life to which He calls us.

Forgiving: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (NIV)
No mistake is too great for our Father’s forgiveness. He does not keep score or hold grudges. His mercy is new every morning.

Even these few attributes transform how we walk with Him. Though God’s nature contains countless perfections, these glimpses into His Fatherly heart remind us that we may approach Him with confidence, rest securely in His love, trust His guidance, and live with the assurance that we are His cherished children.
