A Pathway to Growth Through Pain

“But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction.” — Job 36:15 NIV

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” — Romans 5:3–4 NIV

In The Problem of Pain, C. S. Lewis observed that “God whispers to us in our pleasures and shouts to us in our pain.” This reflects a truth about my spiritual journey. Embracing the truth that my pain can lead me to purpose opens me to the work of God in my life. May I always seek to find strength and hope in my suffering, trusting that He is with me every step of the way.

Pain and suffering are often seen as unwelcome intruders in my life, yet Job 36:15 reminds me that they serve a divine purpose. This verse highlights a powerful truth: in my most difficult circumstances, God is present, speaking to me and delivering me. My circumstances can guide me toward a deeper understanding of myself and my purpose.

When I experience pain, it can feel isolating and overwhelming. However, it is in these moments that God is closest to me, offering comfort and discernment. Pain can refine me, shaping my character and equipping me to fulfill God’s given purpose.

These two verses encourage me to embrace my circumstances with a perspective of hope. God is intimately involved in my life, using even suffering to strengthen my spiritual endurance and lead me to a place of greater reliance on Him.

May you find comfort in knowing that through your storms, God is delivering you and opening your heart and mind to His truth and love.
