First Things First

“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.’” – Matthew 22:37-38 (NIV)

In the quiet moments of our hearts, God asks a simple but profound question: “What comes first in your life?” It is easy to say “God,” but our calendars, our worries, and our quick decisions often tell a different story.

When God holds the place of first love in our lives, everything else finds its proper order. Our relationships become healthier because we are not asking people to fill spaces only God can occupy. Our work becomes meaningful service rather than desperate striving. Our fears lose their grip because we are anchored to something eternal and unshakeable.

But first love requires more than warm feelings—it demands immediate obedience. Imagine a parent calling their child’s name in an emergency. The child who truly trusts their parent does not stop to debate or negotiate—they respond instantly because love has taught them that this voice leads to safety. When we truly love God more than anything else, we do not negotiate with His guidance or delay when He calls.

We do not say “let me think about it” or “after I finish this project.” Love responds quickly, trusting that God’s ways are always better than our own understanding.

This kind of obedience is not always easy. Sometimes God asks us to forgive when we would rather hold onto hurt, to give when we feel we need to save, or to step into something unknown when we crave security. But when we know God’s heart toward us—that He is good, loving, and faithful—immediate obedience becomes our worship. We obey not because we must, but because we have learned that His voice leads to life, peace, and purpose, even when the path seems unclear.

How do we do this—listen for God’s voice and respond at once? It is simpler than we think but requires daily practice. Ask God each morning to speak to you and then pay attention. His voice comes through the Bible verses that seem written just for you, the prayer times when you sense His Presence, the wise friend who says exactly what you needed to hear, and those gentle inner nudges that feel like love calling you forward. Remember, God’s voice always aligns with Scripture and brings peace, even when the path is challenging. If you are unsure, ask Him for confirmation—He delights in making His Will clear to those who want to follow Him.

Start practicing instant obedience with the small stuff—returning that phone call, choosing kindness over sarcasm, taking time to really listen to your child. These little moments of quick response prepare your heart for the bigger times when God asks you to trust Him with something significant.
