The Journey of Release Understanding Letting Go, Surrender, and Giving it to God

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.” Psalm 55:22

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9

When you face life’s challenges, you often hear well-meaning advice: “Just let it go,” “Surrender it to God,” or “Give it to God.” While these phrases might sound similar, they represent different aspects of your spiritual journey with the Lord.

Letting Go is like unclenching your fist. It’s the emotional and mental release of what you have been holding onto – your hurt, your control, your plans. But merely letting go can leave you feeling empty, like dropping something into an bottomless pit. It’s necessary, but it’s only the first step. Letting go isn’t passive resignation; it’s active trust. Example: Releasing bitterness about past attempts to control others’ choices.

Surrendering to God goes deeper. It’s not just releasing your grip; it’s actively choosing to place yourself under God’s authority. When you surrender, you see saying, “Not my will, but Yours Be Done.” It’s a position of yielding, like a branch bending in the wind of God’s Holy Spirit. Examples: Submitting your plans to God’s Wisdom; Yielding your rights to God’s Purposes; Accepting God’s Timing over your preferred timeline; and Embracing God’s Ways even when they differ from yours.

Giving it to God is the most intimate act of the three. It’s a personal transfer of trust. When you give something to God, you see not just releasing it or submitting to His authority – you see actually entrusting it to His Care, believing He will handle it better than you ever could. It’s like placing a precious gift into the hands of someone we trust completely. Example: Actively submitting to God’s Command, even when it seemed contrary to God’s Promises.

All three actions work together in your walk with God:

– You let go of our tight grip on the situation.

– You surrender your right to control the outcome.

– You give it to God, trusting His Perfect Love and Wisdom.

You find peace that defies logic- Philippians 4:7; you discover strength you didn’t know you had- Isaiah 40:3; you experience God’s faithfulness in new ways- 1 Peter 5:7; and you create space for God to work in His way, not yours- Proverbs 3:5-6.

Choose one thing today – just one – that you will completely surrender to God. Write it down, pray over it, and when you feel yourself trying to take it back, open your hands again and whisper, “Lord, I trust You with this.”
